One of the most memorable lessons of the year has been this week's lesson about the Moon. Once students took anchor chart notes about the different phases of the moon, they illustrated those phases using (everyone's favorite) OREO COOKIES!! This week students worked TIRELESSLY on their Drafts for our *Fall Adventure* Writings. We introduced the Writing Process: 1) Prewriting (We put the majority of our focus on the Prewriting step of the Writing Process) 2) Drafting 3) Editing 4) Revising 5) Publishing Students were given a topic and asked to create their own narratives. This was our FIRST look at the Writing Process and students did a marvelous job! This week, each afternoon in Math Workshop we practiced two standards at once! When comparing numbers and ordering numbers, we use the < (less than)… > (greater than)… and = (equal to) signs. EXAMPLES: 161 < 261 294 > 284 350 = 350 Ms. Stocker even managed to sneak in a little place value review! Shhhh ; ) We also learned what Line Plots were. Students had previous knowledge of data and tally charts from our lessons on bar graphs and picture graphs. Students learned that line plots deal with smaller numbers and amounts of data. All 2nd grade students have had about three weeks of Spelling homework. This week, Ms. Stocker has implemented spelling instruction into our Morning Work. Students' spelling activities included repeated writing and rainbow words. We also took this week as an opportunity to begin our handwriting focus. 2nd grade students will be expected to work on handwriting in all content areas.
PARENTS: This week's spelling assessments were sent home in the Completed Work Folders… and I am proud to announce a CLEAR improvement in spelling grades. : ) Thank you to ALL of you who came out to the Fall Festival!! We had a great time! There was plenty of food and food for our teachers, parents and students. I would first like to thank my WONDERFUL classroom parents for donating items and money to contribute to our basket for the auction. We wouldn't have had such a BEAUTIFUL basket without YOU!!
Also, a special thanks goes out to our Room Mom and PTA Representative, Mrs. Reinhart, for putting together our Coffee Themed basket!! This week, we continued our science unit about the Solar System. Students continued working on their Solar System KWL Chart. K- What I KNOW W- What I WANT to know L- What I LEARNED Throughout the week, we compiled a list of 2nd grade Solar System Vocabulary. Students worked in our whole group discussions and in groups to discuss each vocabulary word and its meaning. SOLAR SYSTEM VOCABULARY WORDS: -planetarium: a building where you can study the solar system and outer space -atmosphere: the layers of the Earth -gravity: an invisible force that pulls everything down on Earth -astronaut: a person who travels to outer space -orbit: the path planets travel in space -crater: the holes in the moon's surface -meteorite: chunks of rocks, metal and ice We wrapped up the week learning about the SUN. The sun is the center of our solar system. Students learned the elements of DAY vs. NIGHT and how the Sun determines those elements. Students have just about perfected the Read-to-Someone rotation of Daily 5. Today we discussed ways to successfully read to/with a partner.
Ms. Stocker's 2nd grade did a pretty good job today on our early release schedule. We ate lunch in the classroom and only had ONE spill!! Haha Thank you to my kiddos for a great (short) day! : ) |
